Yahweh... Our Everlasting God- Our Source
The Patriarchs- Week 3 Recap
1. Genesis 21:33
This week in our reading of Genesis one particular verse stood out. Take a look:
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.
What is amazing about the final verse of Genesis 21 is that it ends with Abraham calling on the name of the Lord. In fact, the name Abraham uses is Everlasting God (El-Olam ~the Everlasting God.). To give you some context, it has been over twenty-five years since Abram and Sarai had left Haran. In their travels, Abraham and Sarah received name changes from God; Abraham was in the midst of a second encounter with Abimelech, the king of Gerar; he had secured ownership rights to the well at Beersheba; and their long-awaited son Issac was born just as God had promised. Maybe in calling on the name of the Lord, Abraham was reflecting in thankfulness, maybe he was just in awe. Whatever the case may be, Abraham called on the name of the Lord (oh, what power there is in calling on His name!) and he did one more thing according to the Genesis 21:33.
2. The Planting of a Special Tree
So what exactly is a tamarisk tree? A tamarisk tree has many branches, small leaves and can grow to a height of 20 to 30 feet. Tamarisk trees provide excellent shade in the desert climate. The planting of a tamarisk tree required a reliable water source of which Abraham had just secured. While commentaries have discussed the importance of the verse, I wonder if Abraham's planting of the tree by a watering source could also equate to our need to have an eternal water source not for purposes of physical thirst, but for spiritual thirst. Jesus, our Everlasting Lord is our ultimate well-source of living water that will never will run dry. Because of Jesus and His love for us, we have eternal life. Let's take a peek inside a conversation with Jesus and a Samaritan women. The setting is a well a common place for those in a city to obtain water to support nourishment and household needs.
13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
3. Everlasting God
In thinking about the word "everlasting", Merriam Webster defines the term as "lasting or enduring through all time; eternal or continuing for a long time or indefinitely". God's love mercy, goodness is forever. He is our El-Olam!
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.(Isaiah 40:28)
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:2)
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:13)
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. (Revelation 21:6)
To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1Timothy 1:17)
Oh, princesses of faith...remember
Prayer “empowers and ‘charges up’ every other piece so they can be used effectively against the enemy. Without prayer… your armor, cannot, will not, be infused with the power that only God’s-Spirit can give."
